My mother passed away in April from her third bout of cancer. We knew she was ill, she knew she was ill but the timetable around the care she recieved from her visit to the G.P was amazing.

She had a call from the GP the day after the blood tests advising that she needed a scan. The scan could be offered the day after that. Mum said she needed to call BUPA to check she was covered, but they said “No problem”, NHS say you can go, it’s a “now” thing. From scan to overnight stay for more tests and biopsies was less than a week. From biopsy to specialist less than another week (this one was on BUPA).

It was all a vain effort as the disease had spread all over her body and in total honesty, she knew it and declined any aggressive treatment and was ready to go and be and wanted to be with my dad who passed away 6 1/2 years ago.

Where it all fell down was from there on in. It was almost as if the “no treatment please” statement triggered a “computer says no” and a few leaflets on Palliative Care were to hand, and to be fair a referal to a Palliative specialist.

Mum tried to stay at home as the only NHS option was the local hospital, where they are just not equipped or set up for people who want to pass away in peace and with dignity. The GP was wonderful and made home visits as often as we asked in those four weeks. Mum went downhill fast, had some falls and eventually accepted a bed in the local hospice (a wonderful charity) where she died peacefully three days later.

The NHS were fast and efficient in the diagnosis and the start of treatment offered, where they fell short was in any alternative to that treatment. But at no time was she ever held back from any care due to age or seriousness of her condition.

North Hants Hospital Trust were fine, within the parameters of their set up I think it is fair to say. St Michaels Hospice was amazing, a wonderful establishment full of selfless caring people who do as much as or as little as you ask of them.

Ignore it I might, but I must confess to being impressed by the performance of the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Team.

Some Olympics have been as embarrassing for us as the average Eurovision song contest.

But 14 golds to date speaks of extraordinary efforts and commitments for ‘our’ athletes.

I’m as “bah humbug” about thing as many on here, but there are some far better role models to see than we usually do…… no pop idol – jesus christ superstar – 20 mins of fame – silicon enhanced wanna be – has beens, all hard working and super fit…… maybe I am being drawn in… 😮

I’ve not been on the forum much lately and didn’t realise that you had been ill Jim, it’s never fun with talk of operations and drugs etc, I wish you all of the very best possible health and luck with it all.

I was dragged unwillingly to watch the Olympic torch pass through the town in pouring rain as some fat bloke in an ill-fitting grubby white tracksuit waddled past (with a huge Met Police escort of cars, vans, outriders and runners!),
However, these weeks must be an excellent period for HMG to ‘bury’ oodles of bad news stories!

I don’t hate it, but the hype, the cost and the constant coverage do annoy me somewhat. So, sky plus, other channels, DVD’s and the off switch all come into use !

Tennis, football and other sports seem out of place (in Brazil at the next games there is some sort of wind sailing go-kart event…. much as they did in ancient Greece I believe…..)

and if the John Major/Edwina Currey thing had come out earlier, John Smith could well have been Prime Minister a while before he passed away……

I have to agree on the whole with Arthur though, Labour made a sea change to make themselves popular, they did (IMHO) make some major errors of judgement and Mr Blair himself did a Thatcher and stayed in power far far too long, damaging his party in the process.

I don’t see anybody there in either of the parties that I would call a “leader”, nobody who inspires me to believe in them or vote for them. The current disfunctional duo seem to busy not offending each other, and the opposition seem a little wary of throwing too many sticks and stones as many will land in the “it’s your mess” pile.

Think on though, going back even 30 years they had hours of airtime to make a speech, now its soundbites and media bias, in the expenses scandle George Galloway was whiter than white, his finances were beyond reproach, how much airtime did that get ? …… I don’t support the guy but he did not get a fair press. Dennis Skinner was also whiter than white, neither poster boys for the tabloids, but not worthy of a report?

I don’t have the answer, but I don’t trust anybody who actually seeks power, which would have made me dislike Churchill as well I guess !?:rolleyes:
