Me first….

I’m a big fan of the Osprey series Aircraft Of The Aces and Combat Aircraft, small “bite sized” reads. Excellent to put in a bag if you travelling anywhere, very good artwork and photos. I pick up some gems from them, for example I never knew the Nationalist Chinese used Gladiators against Japan. The Israeli Mirage III one is another eye opener as well.

came home tonight and the ankle biters were out and a quick trawl through Sky bought up ” a few good men” – what the hell, sausage sarnies, peace and quiet and Jack Nicolson stealing a movie in what, 3 scenes?

seem to remember seeing them in that BBC b&w nuclear war movie…. name escapes me… but the missile was Honest John ?

Ostrich (cross between tough chicken and a reasonable steak) Raw Fish (umm, lots of Saki to go please) Aligator steak, and my wife’s corn beef hash.

The latter being surely what pure evil tastes like………:eek:

Daz – there is/was a very good documentary doing the rounds on Sky movies about Tora Tora Tora. Many of the Japanese parts went to various industrialists who put up money for the film (it was an expensive enterprise) which in part explains them being wooden as well as “stoic”. The US actors were all TV rather than movie stars to keep the budget down and the focus on the story not a star. Lots of detail on the technical side of the filming including how a big scene went totally wrong. There is a ship (I forget which) thats damaged and they are trying to beach it, you just see it sail partly out of shot – they had a whole shot set up, lost it all.

A few technical blips as well (I have a Pet Peve about the single finned B-25) but the attack sequence is superb, as for Pearl Harbour…. other than the nurses carrying out triage with lipstick at the hospital which I find moving in the extreme…. its a dud…… dreadful and whats with green Zero’s ?:D and as for making the Zero chase him past the control tower so the soldiers can shoot it !:eek:

anyhow – keep your eye out for the Tora Tora Tora documentary, well worth a look.

Interesting to see the conversation around a type that gets pidgeon holed quite easily with “heavy losses” and “terror weapon” etc etc. It was in front line use 1939-1945, was well suited for the Eastern Front and I think its use in the Battle Of Britian is worth evaluating again. It was one of the first dedicated tactical aircraft, used in one of the first strategic campaigns. Compare this with the US use of the F-105 in Vietnam to attack targets in the North (especially with B-52’s attacking troop concentrations etc in the South)

Had the invasion gone ahead, the JU-87 would have torn through the UK at the head of Panzer columns. I can’t see why it wouldn’t have scored a few kills, I’m sure other aircraft that suffered even heavier losses managed to. The Battle and the Devastator for example suffered horrible losses with less of a contribution than the JU-87 but I’m sure they managed a couple along the way.
