    Hi Steve,

    Great topic,

Lets see if I can put this into a Yank view. Reguadless of what the US Navy says they must also follow US DEP regs. with this in mind there is an effort to recover three F4F and atleast one corsair because of the problem you have brought up.

The problem with any recovery is and those of us who have done them can tell you is $$$$$ and time . I was involved with the Qusuant Air Musuems F6F recovery and we were working against the clock that the US Coast guard had given the Musuem. In this case they basically said remove it or we are going to blow it up. the plane was a Hazard to Navagation. If you wouldlike to find out more about QAM recovery feel free to contact me off line becasue their is alot of Politics involved.

As for the USS Ariziona the main problem is it listed on the United States Historical Preservation List, this limits what the US Park Service can and can’t do with her. there is some talk of drilling a small hole into the main oil bunkers and drain the oil. but like I said its a rather sticky subject.

I know that I was on a survey of a FAA/RN Corsair that had Live ammo on it and we decide that is was not worth are lives to try to recover or even procede with the operations. I guess when it comes down to live ammo on board I would rather have the Military experts to come in and tell me what they think if they say the best thing to do is to blow it up then I might not agree with it, but I have to look at the over all safety part. I know of three recoverys were the ammo was remove with out any Hitchs. but your right how much longer will some of these Bombs remain stable. Its just a matter of time till one leaks and the right counditions happen and the thing goes off. Lets hope its in deep water .

I don’t know if this helps or just lead to new questions.

    Cheers Crazymainer

Make new one if we can……

******If you want to start preserving YOUR HISTORY then may I suggest you get a group together and go out and start recovering these Historical Aircraft*********posted by CRAZYMAINER

If it were that easy then we would all be doing it.

Also depends on where you want to source the parts and the there is the slight problem of cost which the majority of us brits simply dont have.

    Merlin,

If one has to make new one then do hell most of the Flying Mustang and Spits are basically have all new Skin and Spars. Plus all of the Hose’s and Brakes andwiring you get were I’m going.

All you have to do is take alook what they are doing down inAussie land with the P-39 production line.

I didn’t say it was easy hell we have a hard time here in the States but Jeeze there are more Historical Wrecks Per Square Meter then anywhere else in the World.

Cees’s wrong Mr. Rhodes made at Statement saying that the UK Warbird Movement was becoming or has come to American and that certain Museums and gruops are to worry about the Sexxy planes and not about English Aircraft. As I said I owned a British type at one time and i’m looking at possiably another. As for sounding like GW well i’ll just sit back and Smile since most don’t even know my politics. As for me being over the top on the Wix Board well we have alittle old meeting set up with the powers to be in the US Navy to try to get things done, and would you like to know why its because of Helldiver and my comments and that a direct quote from the powers to be in the US Navy. I think maybe if you all don’t want me aroundf then I’ll Bugger off to someplace where I feel happy.

So on the Note I say FareWell Lads and lass’s on off to Never Never land.

Good By and be Safe out their.

    He Wouldn’t happen to Be a …………

I have spoken quite recently to a US airline pilot who said that he is rebuilding a Mosquito to fly. He claimed to have the ‘Title’ (if that’s the correct term) to more than one airframe. On the two or three occassions that I have seen him he has been on his way to Salisbury Hall with metal components, cowling parts I think, to get more details & paterns.
I have no other details but he seemed genuine.

    Hi HP81,

This Yank wouldn’t happen to be a Delta Pilot?

If he does have clear title then I should be able to pulli tfrom the FAA files.

    Jeeze You could have called

My apologies to Crazymainer – I obviously got the entries mixed up.
(I had an overnight stop at Bangor in Maine on the 14/15th Aug. – while travelling to Florida when Hurricane Charlie hit – a very nice part of the country).

    Regards,
    Richard

    Hi Richard,

How long did they hold you out on the Ramp? Did you get a chance to see the inside of the Terminal at all? Their is a nice display on the History of the Airport. Bangor was one of the main jumping off places for B-17 and b-24 heading across the Pond. Also during the Cold War it was home to the 75th and 76th Fighter Squadrons part of the 23rdFg. They also had BUFFS Station their.

    Hi Peter,

I live in Portland Maine but I spend alot of times in the deep woods of are State.

If its close to the shore line then it should be an easy recovery, Hell it looks like the hardest part is on shore. Were is it located in general IE Providance ect. I’m guess its most likely Paper Property and if it is then getting permission to do a recovery is rather easy on that part its getting Ottawas OK that can be sort of Sticky look how long it took to get the 17 out.

Do you know of any Museums that would be interested in the plane? I can give my contacts in the RCAF a ring and see if they would like to do a training operation.

As the old saying goes there is more then one way to Skin at Cat.

When I was talking to the Restoration guys they told me that they are waiting to here about the chance of getting a new hanger if that Happens then this and The Big Sikorsky are going to be the Main attraction.

I really hope they can get the Funds for the new hanger there are alot of stuff out in the Storage area that could be put out on display if there was room.
