    Dear all,

Does anyone possess in their vast collections, any pictures of RAF Broadwell during it’s operational life? I have seen two shots aircraft on David Oakey’s website (http://www.ox18.com), but does anyone possess anything different to that, that they would be willing to share?

    Many thanks
    Steve

    Hi Steve,
sadly I do not have any photos to share but would love to see any if you find some more. I often travel to Broadwell to look around. Very sad to see the watch tower so unloved but it is good to see the buldings that do remain. I have been doing some metal detecting recently and have found many verey cartridges and assorted bits including the bottom of an AM marked 194* coffee cup!
    Cheers
    Matt

Edit, you might try the Atlantik wall website for more photos and info

Will be interesting to hear more about this one. I must admit though if you believe ebay ‘provenance’ and buy things without knowing what they are just because some bloke says it is something then I think that’s pretty naive of the buyer.

Posted this before but Just for those who haven’t seen, this is from the Rukuhia Dump in NZ, unfortunately now under a few thousand tonnes of sand since these photos were taken. Aircraft remained in the surrounding area untill the 70’s and consisted of Avengers, p40’s, Corsairs, venturas and some Harvard parts are also in the dump. Where were all the restorers in the 70’s!! the photos of the aircraft line ups are pretty mind blowing! Lots of talk about other caches of parts in the area and I’ve indentified another buried group positively but sadly the owner won’t give permission to dig.

Far left is of course Canberra’s famous G-6. What I’d like to know is how all these captured E’s and early G’s ended up with Erla Haubes post war and then where did they all go! Back six had an Erla Haube and it dissapeared and the Hendon E had an Erla Haube too, must have been the fashionable thing to do in the 60’s!

Just to throw my views into the mix from my last visit in ’05. My main impression of the museum is that it is a fantastic collection of aicraft and that it is well worth a visit but I had some very juxtaposed experiences coming from the place.
I found the same worn out feeling that a lot of people have experienced but at the same time I saw a good number of volunteers in blue overalls going round the place and working to repair things, in one area they were beavering away re-painting a floor and this was good to see. I found some of the staff to be helpful but at the same time found some to be outright hostile, in some areas the access to the aircraft is limited, around the 110, 88 etc. but in other areas the public can get far to close to the aicraft, within damaging distance.
The battle of britain hall contains some absolute gems but is dark and dingy with a retro 70’s vibe about the place, I can’t imagine it inspires the general public when they go into it and see a lot of tired looking aeroplanes in a dark room, no matter what a room holds if it is in an unattractive and outdated setting people will not get as much out of the experience as they should. Very far removed from the essence and spirit of the exhibits it holds.

One of two remaining 87’s in the world, not a very fitting way to display it, it’s an aircraft not a submarine, should be bright and light not dark and dingy.

Are there any detail photos of the Storch avaliable to show us please! Would love to see some cockpit and engine detail shots. I would be interested to hear what process is used to check the instruments for use, after 60 years I imagine that the pressure instruments are not much of a problem after re-calibration, but why has a modern altimeter been substituted? is it simply due to the inconvenience of flying with ref to KM’s and not feet! I was under the impression that the chemicals in many of the electrical components break down over the years so has any work been required for the vorratsanzeiger or is it not a problem in your experience? I have an electical wendehorizont but i’m a bit reluctant to power it up incase it emits the mysterious purple smoke out the back and turns it into an expensive paper weight.
    Cheers!

The plane got now markings as “yellow 8”?? Got someone a photo with this markings?

    Hi David,
That info comes from a few sources as the aircraft being yellow 8, it does not however, as far as I know, wear the scheme.
Just as a quick question, have you seen anymore photos or videos of red 7 flying other than on your great site,
    Thanks

I’ve seen some rather neat rigs for radiator ground cooling before but I suppose that is the brute force method! All hatches and latches open aswell, spitfire swimming pool!

Alot of what I think about the project has been posted before on this thread by others, having donated again for this next 1 million I’m just wondering for how long this is going to last them till the begging bowl comes out again, the constant begging and threats is wearing and at worst a bit insulting, hopefully I will be able to see my vulcan this year then! I think the vulcan needs to work for its money, the 17’s and 24’s survive in america because they give rides, The tornado makes money because it can give rides but the vulcan can’t, a way must be found for it to pay for itself otherwise this is going to continue to happen every year. They need to actively think of ways to engage large portions of people to part with their money and not just by begging or getting 4 people to go fly with it or having a couple of blokes get stuck in a traffic jam.
