Why a Spitfire II and not a Seafire II? Would make more sense, although probably more difficult to trace – Nermal

    Hi Nermal,

The letters I recieved stated it was a RAF Spit. when I wrote them back they sayed with out a doult it was a RAF aircraft because the head NCO was not to please that his lads where working on some RAF aircraft in their spare time.

Some of those American words I’d never heard of – what is cruller?

And, how can you say caramel with only two syllabes? Isn’t that camel??

After all Steve Paterson said about the USA not having roundabouts, it seems they do, but they call them rotaries. I’ve heard of rotary engines, rotary lawnmowers, rotary clothes lines, but never rotary roads. Or traffic circles either.

As for that easy class one, well here in NZ a gut is your belly, a blow-off is a fart, and crip course I cannot fathom. Does that mean somone as thick as a crip can pass it?

Where does Kitty Corner and Catty Corner come from for diagonal? I’ve never heard that one either. Some of these are fairly obscure references.

Y’all is one of the most vile words invented in my opinion, it makes my skin crawl.

    Hi Dave,

Lets see if I can explain some of the words for you.

    First; Cruller=Pastery in Midwestern talk
Second; Carmel up here in the North East thats how we’s speak it
Third; Crip Course= North Eastern Colleges terms for an easy class
Forth; Kitty Corner is an old English term used by our Founding Fathers
Fifth; Roundabouts here in Southern Maine we have three of them one is quite fun it has seven roads that come to it. You find alot of Roundabouts in the Greater North East, don’t know why but it seems that we have alot of them.

    Now my score was simple

    60% American
40% Yankee (Thats Mainer to you folks)

    Cheers

201 Squadron MR3 Shackletons spent from 13th April through to 28th April 1963 at USN Brunswick, Maine as guests of the USN. Our CO Wing Commander Rodney Roche flew his aircraft in despite suffering leg injuries from a previous skiing accident.

    John,

Very Nice any more photos from this trip.

I always thought TDY was temporary duty!

    Papa,

Your correct, its temporary duty. It seems that when the RAF was at Loring they were their for 6 week tours. I know that at least five Vulcans came to Loring because their was a story in The Bangor Times about them.

    Hi All,

I can speak on Kermits aircraft, since I was on one of the last flight that David had in it before Kermit bought it alonmg with the B-26.

The plane had been up in New England with two down engines #1 and #4 plus it was out of annual. When Kermit bought it he stated that he was going to fly it for a few months and then pickle it till he had time to completly rebuild her.

To say its in rought shape is an understatement I remember doing a walk around before we fired it up for it flight down to Florida and I swear any place it could leak it did. We had a problems getting #4 to turn over had to change the mags out twice.

Thou the plane is IN MY OPPION the most original 24 out their its going to take alot of time and money to bring her back to airworthy status. Beside I think Kermit is more interested in getting the new buildings done at FOF.

A simple answer to that is slim to none, The guys who own and operate these aircraft relie on selling rides to pay for the tours and since the UK doesn’t allow such things it will never happen again.

When the CAF brought over the 29/24 the last time it ended up costing them alot of money. Collings Foundation will not bring there 24 over becasue they sell rides and that is how it pays for itself. I had a talk with Bob Sr. sometime back about what was the chances of the Bomber Tour going to Europe and he made it quite clear that unless the CAA allowed them to sell rides then he would never bring the planes across the pond.

Sorry but I think the only way your ever going to see a 24 or 29 fly is if DX gets their airworthy.

Some more information on High Jump,

On Jan. 29,1947 the USS Philippine Sea CV-47 launched the first of six R4D towards Little America, the first aircraft carried RADM Richard Byrd the pilot was CDR William Hawkes. Operation High Jump really started in and around Dec. 24 1946 with six PBM based on the USS Tangier AV-8.

Their job was to photograph the Antartic. Between the PBMs and the R4D they logged 650 hours covering 1,500,00 square miles of the interior and 5,500 miles of the coastline or the equivalent of half the area of the United States and its entire coastline combined.

The Duck was used to bring the mail and other supplys to and from the fleet to Little America while the HNS-1 most likely where assign to the Philippine Sea as one of their plane guards. The USGC also has a base at Little America and that would explain the presents of USCG aircraft.

    Hope this help out some.

    So Flood or Mr, Webby,

I’m still waiting to hear if you are going to do the following,

1 Explain in open forum why I was bann since I never violate the So-Call New Rules of the Month.

2 When you all decide to delete or lock a thread will you have the decentcy to pm the person the reason why, I really don’t care what the Bloody Rules say most eductaed folks tell someone why they did something.

Oh and if you are still trying to guess hwo I got your sacred Mod. information just ask yourself this how many friends do I have working at Key or better yet which Mod might or might not sent me all those nice thigs you guys have been saying about folks on closed forums.

Makes you just go hummmmmmm now.

    Ok Flood,

I can buy that but why was I banned when acourding to your new rules I should have been put in GD Jail then given another warning then banned was it because I know some stuff that has been said about me and others on the Mod. board and let the Webby know that he/she should watch who they slander on a close Mod forum board.

If I recall before I was booted you made some sort of slanderoius remakes about Steve Patterson and I step up and called you on it. I never attack you I just said you where wrong, as I’ve and others have said you should re-think your position as GD mod because at times it appears to be a conflict of interest when your involved.

Now if you want to call this a personal attack then fine go right ahead and bane me.

Now back to the question at hand is it to much to ask if something is close or deleted that a quick pm saying hey I closed/locked it becasue of this reason.

Ok The How about this then if the Webby or the Moddys feel they need to lock or delete a thread then they should have the comman consideration to pm the person to give a quick reason why.

I’m don’t think that is to much to ask of them and it might stop all of the why did you delete or lock my thread topics.

My photos were indeed of Goxhill in N Lincs, a Type 518/40 tower, the largest type constructed during the war. The field was used as a training base for, amongst others, the 78th FG during WWII.

By 2002 the structure was seriously unsafe and the new owners of the airfield sold the building. It was the subject of a very detailed measured survey and was subsequently carefully dismantled, brick by brick, over a period of several months and will shortly be re-erected in the USA, complete with many salvaged original items such as wc stalls, electrical boxes, coat hooks etc. Drawings for the re-erection were made from the survey drawings of the building coupled with original drawings supplied by the RAF Museum.

    Hi Mark V

Where in the States was it rebuild, I’ve never heard of this and I might have to take a road trip to see it.

    Hi All,

Like to add some Yank stuff,

This is from NAAS Sanford Maine, first one is the Last intact unchange US Navy WWII Tower on the East Coast of the States. I along with a few others help the owner get it put on the National Historical Registery. They are in the process of restoring it back to the WWII standers and if things go right we might have a new musuem opening up in a few years.

The second one is what is left of the Aux.Tower it is sitting in a compound next to the WWII Hangers.
